To the participants of the Sixth Congress of Azerbaijani Journalists

11 July 2013, 13:30

Dear delegates of the congress,

I greet and sincerely congratulate you on the beginning of your regular high forum.

The establishment of political pluralism in Azerbaijan and the creation of favorable conditions for the free activities of the media are among the main directions of public policy. As a result of the consistent reforms carried out in the country after 1993, all artificial barriers limiting the freedom of expression and information were eliminated, the laws governing the activities of the media were brought into line with international standards and the material infrastructure of the national press was strengthened.

The Press Council set up by the First Congress of Azerbaijani Journalists as a self-regulatory body of the press has played a significant role in regulating the state-media and media-society relations in accordance with the best international practices. The activities of the Press Council as a whole have served the development of Azerbaijani journalism and regulation of media relations with government bodies and citizens, improved the professionalism of journalists and prevented the abuse of freedom of expression and information.

Today, the growing opportunities of our country have created the conditions for the implementation of comprehensive measures for the development of the media, including the national press. The Government of Azerbaijan implements consistent measures to strengthen the material and technical infrastructure of publications, improve the social protection of journalists, etc. The main objective of state support for the media is to forge independent, professional and competitive media resources which, at the same time, steadily adhere to the principles of national consciousness and patriotism. At the present stage, when the impact of the global information space on the international public opinion is growing, our press must constantly defend the interests of the Azerbaijani people, make a contribution to the progress of our society and further enhance the reputation of our country.

I do hope that the decisions to be made by the Congress will enable Azerbaijani journalists to continue their mission both in the country and abroad at a higher level and facilitate the development of the national press.

I wish the participants of the Congress and all Azerbaijani journalists every success, long life and good health.

Ilham Aliyev
President of the Republic of Azerbaijan
