President Ilham Aliyev has attended the opening of a tunnel outside the Cardiology Center as part of the first phase of reconstruction of the Bilgah-Novkhani-Sumgayit highway and reviewed the progress of work under the second phase of the reconstruction.

In accordance with the President’s instructions, the road transport infrastructure of Baku continues to be improved, new bridges and overpasses, main roads, underground and above-ground crossings built. Landscaping and creative work are at the center of President Ilham Aliyev’s attention, which contributes to the completion of work on time and high quality. As a result of the consistent measures taken under the instructions of the head of state, the road transport infrastructure of the capital has been supplemented with new facilities.

Transport Minister Ziya Mammadov informed President Ilham Aliyev about the technical parameters of the tunnel built outside the Cardiology Center as part of the first phase of reconstruction of the Bilgah-Novkhani-Sumgayit highway. It was noted that the total length of the tunnel is 566 meters, the length of its covered section is 65 meters and its width is 23 meters. The tunnel was built with high quality. The roadway consists of four lanes and is 15 meters wide. It was noted that the construction of pedestrian subways had been completed in various parts of this road, while the construction of a bridge is nearing completion.

The head of state cut the ribbon symbolizing the opening of the tunnel.

After the opening, President Ilham Aliyev got behind the wheel of a car and drove down the road to check its quality.

Then, President Ilham Aliyev examined the progress of work under the second phase of reconstruction of the Bilgah-Novkhani-Sumgayit highway. The President was informed about the technical parameters of the project. It was noted that according to the project the total length of this section of the six-lane road is 28 kilometers, while each lane is almost 4 meters wide. Twelve bridges and overpasses are to be built along the road above railway crossings. The main objective of the road is to provide, by means of the Heydar Aliyev International Airport-Mardakan roundabout-Bilgah-Sumgayit strategic highway, an international link between the settlements in the north-eastern part of the Absheron Peninsula and the Baku-state border with the Russian Federation highway bypassing the capital. The new highway will also provide the residents of these settlements with access to the Baku-Shamakhi highway, which will contribute to a safer, more economical and convenient link with the west of Azerbaijan.
