A new underground road tunnel has been commissioned at the intersection of Hasan Aliyev and Ataturk Avenues in Baku.

The opening ceremony was attended by President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.

Transport Minister Ziya Mammadov informed the President about the project of tunnel junctions. It was noted that the project is intended to regulate traffic, eliminate traffic congestion and facilitate driving on an area called "Victory Square" near the “Ganjlik” underground station and the roads crossing it without traffic lights. The project envisages the construction of six entries, 10 exits, six tunnel junctions with a total length of 2,470 meters, and 10 pedestrian crossings. Tunnel junctions will link Ataturk and Vagif Avenues, as well as Ataturk Avenue with Tabriz Avenue via Ahmad Bay Agaoglu Street. Thus, the vehicles moving along Tabriz Avenue will be able to bypass the "Ganjlik" roundabout and go directly to the Darnagul highway through the tunnel. In addition, it will be possible to direct traffic towards Khoyski Avenue. The vehicles moving from Vagif Avenue, driving under Khoyski Avenue and through a three-tier underground parking for 400 cars covering an area of 280,000 square meters to be built in the future, will access Ataturk Avenue and pass over Hasan Aliyev Avenue.

It was noted that the total area of the roads to be build under the project is 110,000 square meters. After completion of the project, traffic intensity around "Victory Square" will increase significantly. The road junction under construction in Vagif Avenue passes over the tunnel of the "Ganjlik" underground station.

It was noted that the tunnels are designed in accordance with international standards to resist earthquakes of 9 points magnitude. According to the project, the infrastructure on the area has been fully updated. Numerous communication lines have been replaced by modern ones. Eighty per cent of the planned drilling and 100 per cent concrete and underground excavations in five tunnels have been completed. Under the project, two additional exits are to be built on the "Ganjlik" underground station. Initially, the exit from the "Ganjlik" underground station was moved to Ataturk Avenue towards the center of "Victory Square".

The President cut the ribbon symbolizing the opening of the underground road tunnel at the intersection of Hasan Aliyev and Ataturk Avenues.

It was noted that the total length of the four-lane tunnel is 546 and width 16.5 meters. Construction is carried out by the "Accord Industrial Construction Investment Corporation" Joint-Stock Company. The internal lighting system of the tunnel has been designed by well-known Italian designer companies. Operating on the basis of a semiconductor diode lighting system, it is renowned for its quality, efficiency, safety and durability. The system is controlled by a computer. On the side walls of the tunnel there are computer-controlled lights operating on the basis of semiconductor diodes. Ceiling-mounted projectors operate in several modes – day, night and emergency. There are numerous cat’s-eyes on traffic lanes. To ensure an uninterrupted power supply of the tunnel, generators have been used. Electrical cables are made of non-combustible and heat-resistant material. After completion of the construction, the nearby park will be reconstructed.
After reviewing the work done, President Ilham Aliyev gave relevant instructions.
