Azerbaijani sambo wrestlers have won four silver medals on the eleventh day of the First European Games at the Heydar Aliyev Sports Palace. The medals came from Nazakat Khalilova, Islam Gasimov, Amil Gasimov and Vasif Safarbayov.
President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, his wife, chairperson of the Baku 2015 First European Games Organizing Committee Mehriban Aliyeva and family members watched the competition.
Nazakat Khalilova claimed the silver medal in the women's -52kg. On the way to the final, she defeated Romanian Codrina Ionescu 4-1 and Lithuanian Ruta Aksionova 8-0. Khalilova lost to Russian Anna Kharitonova 5-0 in the final.
Islam Gasimov grabbed the silver in the men's -57kg. He reached the final after beating Romanian Orlando Gruia 9-0, and Georgian Vakhtangi Chidrashvili 3-1. In the gold medal bout, he lost to Russian Aymergen Atkunov.
Amil Gasimov (-74kg) got the silver after losing to Belarusian Stsiapan Papou. On the way to the final, Gasimov beat Georgian Kakha Mamulashvili 10-0, and Bulgarian Martin Ivanov 4-3.
Vasif Safarbayov won the silver in the men's +100kg. He progressed to the final thanks to victories over Macedonian Bajro Mashovikj and Ukrainian Razmik Tonoyan. Russian Artem Osipenko claimed the gold medal in this category.
