President Ilham Aliyev attended the opening of a newly-constructed Tovuz - Boyuk Gyshlag – Garalar highway.
Based on the Order of President Ilham Aliyev on “Additional Measures for accelerating the social-economic development of Tovuz region”, dated October 7, 2009, the reconstruction of the road of strategic importance began in November of the same year. The road, with a length of 53 km, joins 43 residential settlements with 21 thousand population, while also connecting the 19 mountainous villages on the border with Armenia with the center of the region.
Tens of thousands cubic meters of soil, sand and gravel mixture have been spread over the road bed and a layer of asphalt – concrete was leveled over 340 thousand square meters during the reconstruction works. Numerous bridges, water passages, bus-stops have been built over the rivers along the road and 9 bridges have been fully renovated.
The reconstruction of the Tovuz-Boyuk Gishlag-Garalar highway has simplified the use of all transport vehicles for a total of 12,000 people from 25 settlements in Gadabay District and allowed them the opportunity to deliver their harvested crops to the market in a timely manner.
The new road will play an exceptional role in the development of tourism and overall economic growth of the district. The number of tourists attracted by the district’s climatic conditions, natural forests and refreshing water springs has increased several times since reconstruction of the highway. Work is currently under way to expand the scope of services for future tourists.
President Ilham Aliyev was informed that a tunnel of an unknown age had been discovered at the 39th km of highway. Therefore, a 100-meter section of the road was not coated in asphalt as appropriate instructions have been issued for archeological research to be conducted there. Afterwards, this section of the road will also be asphalted.
As part of the project, a lot of improvement work has been carried out on access and local roads all along the highway. Additionally, a new 26-km road has been built to facilitate travel of military servicemen in a borderline area.
The President cut the ribbon symbolizing the opening of the road.
