The people of the United States join me in extending best wishes to you and the people of Azerbaijan on the occasion of Azerbaijan’s Republic Day. We join all Azerbaijanis in celebrating the May 28, 1918, birth of an independent Azerbaijan, the first secular, democratic Muslim country in the world.
Our two countries have enjoyed strong cooperation on security matters, and we appreciate Azerbaijan’s participation in the NATO mission in Afghanistan. Over the years, our countries have also had a close partnership on energy issues, and we commend you on concluding the Southern Gas Corridor Final Investment Decision in December. We encourage Azerbaijan to reinforce its leadership role on human rights and fundamental freedoms. We also remain ready to help Azerbaijan find its way toward a peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Doing so will contribute significantly to the continued strength, stability, and independence that we all want for Azerbaijan.
Once again, we celebrate the vibrant culture and history of Azerbaijan, and congratulations on your National Day.
