Within the framework of the NATO Summit, the meeting of the Heads of State and Government of the nations contributing to ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) took place in the capital of Portugal, Lisbon.
President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev attended the meeting.
President Ilham Aliyev met with world leaders before the meeting.
At the meeting, which was attended by NATO member countries’ heads of state and government, President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, President of European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso and representatives of other international organizations, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen stated that Afghanistan had passed a great development path in recent years, extensive reconstruction and renovation works had been carried out in the country, security had strengthened, and the governing institutions had reinforced. Every country attending the meeting had a role in development of Afghanistan.
President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev made a speech at the meeting.
The President stated that Azerbaijan’s cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is beneficial. Stating that the country had been active in NATO “Partnership for peace” Program and Individual Partnership Action Plan, President Ilham Aliyev also drew attention to the fact Azerbaijan had been in close cooperation with NATO peacemaking operations around the world.
The President said Azerbaijani peacekeepers were making military and civil contribution to NATO`s International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.
Following the meeting, the heads of state and government of the nations contributing to the International Security Assistance Force had their photos taken together.
Then, the heads of state and government, participating at the meeting, had an official dinner together.
