The chairman of the “Melioration and Water Management” Open Joint Stock Company, Ahmad Ahmadzadeh, and the chairman of the “AzerKorpu” Open Joint Stock Company which carried out construction operations, Afandi Ismiyev, informed the head of state of the work done.

It was indicated that one of the most important projects implemented by the “Melioration and Water Management” Open Joint Stock Company has been associated with the reconstruction of the Samur-Absheron irrigation system. Within the project framework, the Main Hydropower Installation on the Samur River has been renovated. The initial 50-km section of the Samur-Absheron canal has been completely renewed. A sophisticated water purification facility has been built and a modern concrete-coated Khanarkh canal commissioned together with modern hydro-technical facilities. Concrete-coated canals have been built between farms for the first time in Azerbaijani history.

It was noted that as part of the reconstruction of the Samur-Absheron irrigation system, to be carried out in four stages over the course of 14 years, the construction of the Takhtakorpu water reservoir, the Valvalachay-Takhtakorpu canal and the Takhtakorpu-Jeyranbatan canal is currently under way at the level of international standards. Such hydro-technical facilities utilize the latest scientific and technological innovations and are built only in developed countries of the world.

The head of state was informed that construction of the first section of the canal has been financed by a loan allocated by the Islamic Development Bank. The concrete canal is 31.45 km in length. The hydro-technical facility has a throughout capacity of 75 cubic meters per second, is 4 meters wide at the bottom and 4.3 meters deep. The canal originates from the water-intake installation on the Valvalachay River of the Samur-Absheron canal and ends after passing through a two-pipe culvert of the Shabran River. Earthwork of 3 million cubic meters, embankment activities of 200,000 cubic meters and 61,000 cubic meters of concrete work have been carried out within the first stage of construction. Special concrete placing machines used in the most sophisticated construction projects were used. This section of the canal has one main facility, two culverts, four bridges and 12 flood-water facilities.

President Ilham Aliyev pressed the button commissioning the first section of the Valvalachay-Takhtakorpu canal.

The head of state was also informed of the construction of the second 20.75-km section of the canal financed by the State Oil Fund. It was indicated that three culverts, two tunnels, 10 bridges, 20 flood-water facilities and other hydro-technical facilities would be built as part of the second stage. So far, a 10-km section of the 14-km open canal has been concreted, the construction of the first out of two 5.7-km tunnels completed, while earthwork and concreting are to be completed on an 800-meter section of the second. The construction of other hydro-technical facilities on the canal is close to completion. Construction operations are scheduled for completion in 2012. The implementation of this project will help improve irrigation on an area of more than 19,000 hectares, while a total of 8,866 hectares of new irrigation area will be commissioned in Shabran District.
