The CIS monitors have spoken positively of Sunday’s parliamentary election in Azerbaijan.
The monitors’ Mission Chief Sergei Lebedev told a news conference in Baku earlier today that the election had been well organized, democratic and, more importantly, held in keeping with the relevant national legislation requirements.
According to preliminary estimates by the Central Elections Commission, the ruling party Yeni Azerbaijan, or New Azerbaijan, is in the lead and is due to win at least 68 seats in the 125-seat Milli Madjlis, or parliament. The turnout slightly exceeded 50%.
