Aghdam

Aghdam district is located in the foothills of the Garabagh plain. Aghdam city, founded in the 18th century, is one of the ancient historical places. Aghdam has a multitude of architectural and artistic monuments with ancient history. Among them, one can mention the mausoleum built in the 19th century, the Khanoghlu mausoleum, the mausoleum of Panah Khan, the mansion of Panah Khan, two chest-like monuments and the vault dating back to the 15th century.
After the occupation by Armenia on July 23, 1993, serious damage was caused to state and private property in the district, a significant part of the district’s numerous historical sites were destroyed or their appearance was intentionally changed.
According to the trilateral statement of Armenia's capitulation signed by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, and the President of the Russian Federation on November 10, 2020, Aghdam district was returned to Azerbaijan without military operations and casualties on November 20, 2020. This date, November 20, is celebrated as Aghdam City Day in accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan “On the Establishment of City Days in the Liberated Territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan”.
The return of former internally displaced persons to Aghdam commenced on March 27, 2025, and this process continues at an increasing pace.
As a result of the special attention of the head of state, extensive restoration and construction work is currently underway in Aghdam. This work is currently carried out in parallel with the demining process. To date, the head of state has inaugurated the Barda-Aghdam highway, the 110/35/10 kV “Aghdam” junction substation, the Khachinchay reservoir, the Aghdam Regional Digital Management Center and Training and Education Complex, the Aghdam Railway and Bus Station Complex. In addition, the Aghdam Imaret Complex, the “Aghdam City Hotel” and the "Hilton Garden Inn Aghdam" hotel have been put into operation.
Significant efforts have been made to preserve and restore the region’s cultural heritage, with historical, cultural, and religious monuments being rehabilitated. As a result of these projects, the Aghdam Juma Mosque has been restored. The opening ceremony of the restored mosque was attended by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Sadyr Japarov. Additionally, the historic mosque in the village of Giyasly in Aghdam has also been restored. The Aghdam Mugham Center, which will play an important role in the restoration, teaching and promotion of the pre-occupation glory of the ancient art of mugham in the Garabagh region and instilling love for mugham in the younger generation, has also been built and put into operation.
The head of state attaches special importance to accelerating the economic development of Garabagh and East Zangezur and facilitating the employment for the population returning there. As a result of this attention, ten different-purpose enterprises have already started operating in the Aghdam Industrial Park, the second largest in the country in terms of the number of residents.
The first phase of the Sarijali and Kangarli villages of Aghdam district, the foundations of which were laid by President Ilham Aliyev, has already been inaugurated. The head of state met with residents moving into the Kangarli village of Aghdam and presented them with the keys to their new homes. In addition, buildings of the Kangarli village secondary school and the nursery school were also inaugurated. As a result of large-scale efforts to develop social infrastructure, Secondary School No. 1 and Kindergarten No. 1 were constructed in the city of Aghdam. The completion of these significant projects clearly demonstrates that, under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, the reconstruction of educational and childcare institutions in the country is being carried out consistently and at a high level.
President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Japarov, who was on a visit to Azerbaijan to participate in the 17th Summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization, attended the inauguration of the first phase of Khydyrly village in the Aghdam district.
As a result of the measures implemented to build residential settlements meeting modern standards in Garabagh and Eastern Zangazur, the second residential complex was commissioned in the city of Aghdam. In this regard, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva attended the opening ceremony and met with the residents who have relocated there.
