To the participants of the International Oil and Gas Media Forum

Dear friends,
My warm greetings to the participants of the International Oil and Gas Media Forum being held in Baku!
At the present stage, when issues of global energy security represent particular importance, the production and transportation of hydrocarbons and revenue management policies are constantly in media spotlight. The forum being held on the initiative of the International Press Institute creates favorable conditions for considering this relevant topic again.
Rich in natural resources, the Republic of Azerbaijan is known for its extractive industry tradition. Back in the 19th century Azerbaijan pioneered industrial oil production, while in the middle of the 20th century it laid the foundation for oil production offshore. After gaining independence through the implementation of a new oil strategy defined by nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev, great opportunities opened up for development and transportation of the vast energy potential of the Caspian Sea to world markets and for the expansion of transnational cooperation in the region. The Republic of Azerbaijan has already become an alternative energy center of the world. Thanks to its powerful infrastructure and a diversified network of oil and gas pipelines, Azerbaijan now plays an important part in ensuring the energy security of Europe.
Azerbaijan has joined the international program “Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative”, created the necessary conditions for civil society engagement in the management of oil revenues within the country and abroad, and international audits.
The activities of the State Oil Fund, which accumulates the revenue fetched by the sale of energy, is highly regarded internationally. A significant portion of the fund’s assets is saved for future generations, while the other part is transparently channeled into the development of the non-oil sector, social and economic infrastructure, welfare of citizens and democratic reforms. The presence of pluralism, freedom of speech and the press and free media in the country enable comprehensive information of the public about the energy policy and revenue management.
I believe that this international forum, which involves influential media outlets of the world, journalists and experts writing about the energy sector, will be remembered for constructive discussions, valuable suggestions and initiatives on the subject.
I congratulate the forum participants and wish you every success.
Ilham Aliyev
President of the Republic of Azerbaijan
