The Baku Funicular has been commissioned after major overhaul and reconstruction.
President Ilham Aliyev and his wife Mehriban Aliyeva have attended the opening ceremony.
The extensive creative work carried out in Baku in recent years, the landscaping of parks and alleys, the construction and reconstruction of culture centers in line with modern requirements, the major overhaul of the entire transport infrastructure have turned Baku into one of the most developed cities worldwide. The major repairs of the Baku Funicular, which imparts special beauty to the capital and is expected to serve the residents and visitors of Baku, is a continuation of the measures being taken to this end.
The Baku Funicular was commissioned on 5 May 1960. The first funicular carriages were delivered to Baku from Kharkov, Ukraine. Each carriage of the two-station funicular could travel at a speed of 2.5 meters per second and covered the distance from one station to the other in four minutes. Running at an interval of 10 seconds, the funicular could carry around 2,000 people an hour.
The Baku Funicular has been renovated on several occasions. According to an instruction of President Ilham Aliyev, major repairs and reconstruction of the Baku Funicular commenced last year. The new design of the Baku Funicular has been prepared in line with the latest standards. Repair and reconstruction work has been carried out with the highest quality.

The head of state was informed about the work done. It was indicated that the lower and upper vestibules and the old rails of the funicular had been completely renewed and new carriages purchased. The mechanical and electronic equipment has been fully replaced as well. Both stations of the Baku Funicular are made of glass. The Baku Funicular will operate free of charge until 29 May.

After reviewing the Baku Funicular, the President and his wife attended the opening of a pedestrian subway built in Mikayil Huseynov Street at the Azneft roundabout.
The head of state cut the ribbon symbolizing the opening of the subway.
Transport Minister Ziya Mammadov informed the President about the technical parameters of the pedestrian subway.
The subway, 54 meters long and six meters wide, will facilitate the passage of pedestrians from the statue of Bahram Gur towards the National Seaside Park and the newly-built State Museum of Azerbaijani Carpets and Applied Art. The subway is fitted with a modern lighting system. The previous communications were fully replaced during construction.

Then President Ilham Aliyev and his wife Mehriban Aliyeva examined the façade of the State Museum of Azerbaijani Carpets and Applied Art built in an interesting architectural style at the National Seaside Park.
The President and his wife also reviewed progress of landscaping and reconstruction of an area referred to as the Venice at the National Seaside Park.
This area imparts special beauty to the National Seaside Park. It was indicated that landscaping and construction work here is carried out in line with the latest standards. It will be well suited for people’s recreation.
Then the President and his wife examined the section of the National Seaside Park to the State Flag Square.
